At a press conference with Republican leaders today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said House Republicans have twice passed legislation to replace the president's sequester with responsible cuts and reforms, and the onus is now on President Obama and Senate Democrats to do the same. Following are Speaker Boehner's remarks:
"You know, families and small businesses are struggling and I think they believe we need a new approach here in Washington. I think we must work together on pro-growth economic policies - things like making sure that our tax code is competitive and we need to reform our tax code, bring down the rates for all Americans and make it fair. I think they expect us to continue to expand American energy production throughout our country. It's going to give us a huge advantage over the next couple of generations if we continue to develop our energy resources. And I think most Americans believe that we've got to stop government overregulation that's strangling our economy and strangling economic growth.
"You know, last night the president offered up more of the same: higher taxes and more "stimulus' spending.
"And just as disappointing, we're weeks away from the president's sequester and the president laid out no plan to eliminate the sequester and the harmful cuts that will come as a result of it. Republicans have twice passed bills to replace the sequester. It's incumbent upon the president and Senate Democrats to show us their plan to stop the sequester from going into effect."
