Blackburn Statement on House Passage of "Require a PLAN Act"

Congressman Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) today issued the following statement in support of the "Require a PLAN Act," which would require the President to explain to the American people how he intends to balance the budget.

"For the fourth time in five years, President Obama has violated the law by failing to submit a budget on time. It has been 1,376 days since Senate Democrats last passed a budget. Even worse, the government spends $1 trillion more than it takes in every year. We can't afford to keep that up.

"The Democrats who run Washington don't seem to get it. Our nation is in the midst of a debt crisis. We owe it to hard-working Americans to ensure their tax dollars are being spent in a fiscally responsible manner.

"A balanced budget is important to seniors who rely on the benefits they've paid for and earned, to middle-class Americans who already pay too much in taxes, and to our children, whose future can only be secured by the federal government getting on a spending plan. By approving the "Require a PLAN Act' today, it reaffirms our commitment to getting our nation on a path to fiscal health.

"This legislation is part of a series of measures House Republicans are taking up that will help pave the way to restore fiscal responsibility in Washington. Last month we passed "No Budget, No Pay' that will require the Senate to take up a budget for the first time in nearly four years or else they won't get paid.

"As a member of the House Budget Committee, I am ready to get to work with my colleagues on finding solutions to balancing the budget and putting an end to the out-of-control spending. It is well past time that the President and Senate Democrats joined us in that effort."
