U.S. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) issued the following statement today:
"Wayne LaPierre's bizarre, out-of-touch press conference should be called out for what it truly is -- a disgusting, desperate attempt to block the enactment of responsible gun safety legislation just days after one of the worst mass shootings in our nation's history. Our schools should be places for students to learn in a safe and nurturing environment, and the idea of injecting guns into public schools as a strategy for keeping children safe is outrageous."
"What we need to do instead is enact commonsense measures to promote gun safety by renewing the assault weapons ban, banning the ammunition clips used in mass shootings by passing the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, and closing loopholes to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals. Considering that 70% of the NRA's membership supports closing background check loopholes to prevent criminals and the seriously mentally ill from accessing guns, I am hopeful that Congress will find the political courage to address these issues swiftly despite Mr. LaPierre's best efforts."
