Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08) announced that on Tuesday the House and Senate reached an agreement on H.R. 3783, the Countering Iran in the Western Hemisphere Act of 2012, legislation Fitzpatrick helped to introduce in the House.
"As a co-sponsor of this important measure, I am pleased to announce that the Senate has agreed to join me in preventing Iran from skirting the sanctions the international community has imposed and halting the dangerous expansion of Iranian influence so close to our shores," said Fitzpatrick.
H.R. 3783, the Countering Iran in the Western Hemisphere Act, would direct the Secretary of State to submit to Congress a strategy to address Iran's growing presence and activity in the Western Hemisphere. Iran is currently pursuing cooperation with Latin American countries through economic and security agreements in order to lessen the blow of international sanctions of its nuclear program.
A Senate amendment states that the comprehensive State Department strategy may be submitted in classified form, but must also include an unclassified summary of policy recommendations to address the growing Iranian threat in the Western Hemisphere.
Fitzpatrick concluded, "The United States, along with the international community, must continue to aggressively pursue policies to pressure the Iranians to give up their nuclear program, and I believe that this bill is another step in the right direction."
