U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich released the following statement after voting to confirm Senator John Kerry as the next United States Secretary of State:

"Senator John Kerry has built an extraordinary and distinguished career of service to our country. As a Vietnam War veteran and the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Kerry earned the respect, confidence, and trust of his senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle. And he is respected around the world for his steady grasp and acumen on foreign policy and diplomacy.

"I have no doubt that Senator Kerry will demonstrate strong leadership on the many foreign policy challenges facing our nation, including bringing our troops home from Afghanistan and increasing international pressure on Iran through sanctions and diplomacy.

"I enjoyed working with my friend John Kerry in the Congress and I look forward to continue working with him in his new role as Secretary of State.

"I express my sincere gratitude to Hillary Clinton for her admirable service to our country and wish her the best of luck."
