Rep. Miller: Real Immigration Reform Begins with Strong Border Security

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10), Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, today made the following statement in response to President Obama's State of the Union address outlining the need for comprehensive immigration reform:

"I am glad that the President outlined the need for strong border security policies to move our nation forward. Although our immigration system is imperfect and is in need of serious reforms, comprehensive immigration reform can only be considered once the American people are convinced the border is secure.

"As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, I want to ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes made in the past by accepting empty promises on border security. Instead, we should verify any claims that the border is more secure than ever by forcing the Department of Homeland Security to develop a comprehensive plan to secure the border and implement a system to measure progress.

"I look forward to hearing from key Department officials during my upcoming Subcommittee hearing on February 26th to hear how they would define what a secure border looks like, how we get there and most importantly, how the American people can be assured that the border is truly secure."
