Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Republican Attempts to Change the Electoral College System

Statement

Date: Jan. 25, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Elections

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement in response to an article in today's Washington Post highlighting attempts by Republicans in several states, including Michigan, to change the Electoral College system:

"I am stunned that Republicans in the Michigan Legislature are pushing a purely partisan ploy to rework our Electoral College system to subvert the will of voters. After losing the 2012 presidential popular vote by nearly five million votes, the GOP's new strategy now appears to be "if you can't win honestly, change the rules.'

"This latest Republican ruse to undermine our democratic process is indefensible and is nothing more than a shameless scheme to silence the will of the people and rig elections in their favor. You should not be able to manipulate the process just because you don't like the outcome of an election."
