Tsongas Sworn in for 113th Congress

This afternoon, Congresswoman Niki Tsongas was sworn in as the Representative from the Third Congressional District of Massachusetts for the 113th Congress.

Congresswoman Tsongas released the following statement.

"I want to thank the residents of the Third District for giving me the privilege of representing you in Congress. The redistricting process has offered me an opportunity to introduce myself to new cities and towns, each of which are unique but in so many cases share similarities with those I have represented for the past five years. The name and number of this district may have changed, but it remains one of the most innovative, diverse and influential regions in Massachusetts.

"The past two years have seen our nation begin to emerge from a historically difficult economic period. Locally, we've seen reassuring signs of businesses expanding and creating jobs; clean energy initiatives are taking hold across the Merrimack and Nashoba Valleys; and state-of-the art technology and education centers are showcasing the Third District's bright minds and vast resources.

"There is, of course, still much to be done on a local and national level to continue the forward progress. As we begin the 113th Congress, we must make a real down payment on our national debt. I am confident we can do so in way that protects the vital services that bolster so many Americansand avoids blind, sweeping cuts that could undermine our fragile economic recovery.

"I am committed to working in partnership with the communities, families and businesses of the Third District to garner ideas and advocate for policies that reinforce the long-term health of our economy.

"I will continue to advocate for resources that will better protect the men and women of our armed forces, such as improved body armor, as well as support the Massachusetts companies that are creating jobs and leading the way in military innovation. I will remain a leading national voice for the prevention and elimination of sexual assault in the military, ensuring that provisions I have championed are fully implemented.

"In order to achieve our shared goal of a stronger America, the 113th Congress must seek common ground and work across party lines wherever possible. Our nation cannot afford another two years of partisan theatrics and stalled legislation. The American people, and the people of the Third District, deserve a Congress of action."
