Boustany Sends Strong Message to President Obama Regarding Second Amendment Rights

Statement

Date: Jan. 25, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., M.D., (R-South Louisiana) issued the following statement after signing two letters addressed to President Barack Obama reiterating the Constitutional right to bear arms, following the President's announcement of 23 executive actions and proposals to Congress to implement gun control measures on American citizens:

"The tragic events at Newtown constitute a horrible and senseless tragedy no one ever wants to see happen again. To be sure, there are several proactive and common-sense steps we can take to limit the risk of these painful incidents, like improving mental health screening and treatment. An across-the-board gun ban, much like the ban enacted in previous decades which saw crime rates actually increase, is not only bad policy -- it is unconstitutional.

"By signing these letters to the President signaling our opposition to his plan limiting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding American citizens, House Republicans are sending a strong message that we will stand and fight to preserve this basic right. The actions of one mentally disturbed individual do not warrant this attack on our Constitutional freedoms. I am committed to using every avenue in my power to preserve the Second Amendment for law-abiding citizens in South Louisiana and throughout our country."
