Fleming Introduces Bipartisan Legislation to Simplify Tax Filing for Seniors

Statement

Date: Jan. 4, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement today as he re-introduced H.R. 38, the Seniors' Tax Simplification Act, with Congressman John Barrow (D-GA):

"No one likes paying taxes, but this long overdue legislation would at least simplify the process for members of the Greatest Generation, our senior citizens. The Seniors' Tax Simplification Act is a bipartisan bill that would create one simple form -- 1040SR -- for seniors who currently are required to use much longer and unwieldy forms, even if their only income is through Social Security. A short form for seniors could also lower the cost of compliance, and that's the right direction for fundamental tax reform. I'm delighted to be working again with Rep. Barrow, with whom I introduced this bill in the last Congress. The concept behind this important legislation for seniors has been introduced in every Congress since 2004. It's time to get this done."

Note: The Seniors' Tax Simplification Act has been endorsed by AARP, Americans for Tax Reform and the 60 Plus Association.

Dr. John Fleming is Chairman of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs and is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He is a physician and small business owner and represents the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana.
