Congressman Pompeo Responds to President's Gun Control Proposals

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Mike Pompeo issued the following statement responding to the President's call to further regulate firearms:

"Americans have an individual and inalienable right to keep and bear arms, a right enshrined by our Constitution. I am disappointed that the President has decided once again to take the path of most resistance by pursuing an anti-democratic, anti-Second Amendment approach that cooler heads in his own party are already disavowing. The President's policy of never letting a crisis go to waste repeatedly harms Americans' most fundamental rights, and the Congress is not going to help him dismantle the Second Amendment. While I'm certainly willing to review what the President has proposed and find ways to move forward, we shouldn't use a crisis to promote bad policy.

"The top federal regulator of firearms, the BATF, hasn't had a permanent, Senate-confirmed director in over six years, and enforcement of regulations already on the books is lax. Not to mention the fiasco that is the Obama Administration's still-unexplained Fast and Furious gun-running operation. Is it too much to ask that our President enforce the laws we already have in place rather than try to take guns away from law-abiding citizens?"
