Huelskamp: Obama's Gun Proposal Threatens Patient Privacy

Statement

On Wednesday, President Obama announced his intentions to limit Second Amendment rights. Contained within President Obama's 23 executive "actions" are at least seven objectives or goals that impact the current health care law. Congressman Tim Huelskamp, who led efforts in the 112th Congress to shine the light on threats to patient privacy in ObamaCare, released the following statement expressing concern about additional threats to patient privacy as a result of President Obama's desire to enact a national anti-gun agenda:

"The intertwining of ObamaCare and President Obama's new anti-gun agenda raises serious concerns. With earlier and on-going efforts by the Obama Administration to invade personal liberties by collecting sensitive patient data, we should now be concerned that the Administration wants to reassure providers that they can ask -- and record information -- about patients' gun ownership and storage of firearms. It seems that there is no end to the Administration's efforts to conduct citizen surveillance in the exam room.

"The Obama Administration promotes the need and ability of health care providers to ask about guns under the guise of protecting providers' rights. How ironic for an Administration that has no regard for the religious liberties of health care providers to claim now that they want to 'preserve the rights of health care providers to protect their patients and communities from gun violence.'"
