Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the President and Vice President's efforts to reduce gun violence:
"I applaud President Barack Obama and Vice President Biden for their tremendous leadership in issuing recommendations and taking action to reduce gun violence. The Vice President listened to all sides of the debate and the recommendations from the Gun Violence Task Force respond to the public's demand to protect children and all Americans from gun violence. Today, the President signed a historic 23 Gun Violence Reduction Executive Actions into law, while also calling for Congress to pass a number of critical laws to help keep our kids and communities safe. I strongly support the President's comprehensive proposal, which also includes important school safety, law enforcement, and mental health resources.
"The President has done his part. Now it is time for Congress to do our part. As the President urged today, we must reinstate a Federal Assault Weapons Ban, in order to protect our children. We must pass laws to ban assault magazines. We must make gun trafficking a federal crime that carries stiff penalties. And we must act to close the gun-show loophole and require background checks for all firearms sales. I believe that those who want to own guns have that right under the Second Amendment but I also believe that our children and communities have the right to safety and protection from gun violence."
