Today, Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam (R-IL) released the following statement on news that the national unemployment rate increased to 7.9 percent in the month of January:
"What a way to begin a second term. This week, President Obama disbanded his jobs council as our nation's GDP shrunk for the first time in over three years and the national unemployment rate went up to 7.9 percent. Four years of spending binges and big government policies have not provided the growth and stability the White House promised, and millions of Americans are still struggling to make ends meet. The White House and the U.S. Senate must come forward and work with the House on a long-term plan to get our economy back on track instead of accepting this week's dismal trifecta as the new normal."
