Miller Praises House Passage of No Budget, No Pay

Location: Washington, DC

Today, after House passage of H.R. 325 (No Budget, No Pay), legislation to temporarily suspend the debt ceiling and withhold Member pay if they fail to pass a budget before April 15, 2013, Committee on House Administration Chair Candice Miller, R-Mich., issued the following statement:

"Our constituents sent us to Washington to do our jobs, which includes adopting a budget -- a plan -- to tackle our debt. Simply raising the debt limit again and again isn't a plan -- it's a way of skirting responsibility and avoiding the hard decisions that must be made to address our out-of-control spending.

"This bill holds Congress to the same standards that apply to the hard working Americans who have sacrificed to make ends meet in this tough economy. When times are tight, you balance your checkbook. When you run out of money, you stop spending. And if you don't do your job, you don't get paid. These are the principles that Americans live by and we certainly should be no exception.

"Today, with bipartisan support, we voted to put our paychecks on the line and take the first step towards a meaningful, bicameral debate about this nation's fiscal crisis. I thank my colleagues for their support and look forward to the legislation's bipartisan support in the Senate."
