The Right to Keep and Bear Arms

Statement

Date: Jan. 18, 2013
Issues: Guns

Dear Friends,

I support the 2nd Amendment and am a lifetime member of the NRA because I believe a free people must be guaranteed the right to defend themselves and their families.

Like you, I was shocked and saddened by the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. Our country mourned the loss of these innocent lives and rightfully asks why did this happen, and what can be done to prevent it from happening again. When the President announced his new legislative proposals this week, I hoped his plan would include areas where we could find common ground, like doing a better job of keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and treating the mentally ill. Sadly, this was not the case.

In a cynical attempt to exploit the tragedy in Newtown, the President unveiled sweeping new gun control proposals. Instead of taking real steps to stop future tragedies like our country recently faced, the President is using it as an opportunity to advance his own radical agenda.

While passing laws restricting the rights of gun owners may make some members of Congress and the President feel good, history has shown us that gun bans are not effective in stopping crime. I will oppose legislation that attempts to score cheap political points at the expense of law abiding citizens, including a so-called "assault weapons" ban.

Stay in touch and God bless,
