Rep. Dan Maffei today insisted that Social Security and Medicare must be protected from cuts as the House of Representatives searches for ways to cut spending and balance the federal budget.

Maffei made his comments in a speech on the House floor, his first since returning to Congress earlier this month.

"We need to balance the budget, but we need to do it the right way, not on the backs of our middle class and seniors," Maffei, D-DeWitt, said in the speech.

He added, "Medicare and Social Security must be protected. We can do this without sacrificing vital investments in future generations."

Maffei made his speech after votes today when House members are permitted to speak for one minute on any topic of their choosing.
