Rep. Maloney cosponsors renewal of Violence Against Women Act

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-12-NY) joined House Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Gwen Moore (D-WI), Co-chair of the Congressional Women's Caucus in reintroducing the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) today. In announcing her co-sponsorship, Maloney issued the following statement:

"For anyone who might question the need for re-authorization of this law, I would suggest that you simply Google "women domestic violence"-- the news you will find about will be alarming and heartbreaking.

"Protecting people from harm is the most fundamental service that any government can provide. And we know-- from experience-- that the Violence Against Women Act helps to do this in critical ways. It saves the lives of both men and women and helps keep victims safer from violent, aggressive abusers.

"I'm especially proud that his version of VAWA includes a measure I have sponsored in the past--The Campus SaVE Act, which would require U.S. colleges and universities to develop official policies on sexual assault and dating violence; collect and disclose information about these crimes; and to update and expand existing domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking services on their campuses. This is vital because an estimated 1/3 of college students experience domestic violence.

"There is only one key issue left for those who may still oppose the bill: Do they believe that all people deserve equal protection under the law? Does equal mean equal? For me, the answer is clear-- a resounding yes."
