Crawford Statement on No Budget, No Pay Vote

Statement

Today, Congressman Rick Crawford (AR-1) issued the following statement after voting in support of the No Budget, No Pay legislation. The bill passed the House on a vote of 285-144.

"I have decided to support the three-month extension of the debt limit after leadership reviewed a draft proposal I have to make headway in passing permanent spending controls and indicated it is an initiative worth pursuing. I am by no means an unqualified yes going forward, and my vote will depend on the level of progress we are making toward implementing permanent spending controls.

"As I said last year, non-binding budgets and statutory "budget control' acts have clearly failed to control government spending, which now exceeds 100 percent of GDP. Entitlement reform and non-binding budgets were used to balance the budget in the 1990s; however, after the putative end of the era of big government, Congress created new unfunded entitlement promises to the tune of $30 trillion. It has been a bipartisan spending problem that must be addressed if we are to preserve the American Dream for our children and grandchildren."
