As President Obama Begins Second Term, Republican Continue Political Gimmicks

MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

Earlier this week, I was proud to witness the second inauguration ceremony for President Barack Obama. On that day, we had an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the last four years, while looking ahead to the challenges we continue to face. It is my hope that in President Obama's second term, Republicans in Congress will work with Democrats and the White House with a renewed sense of bipartisanship and compromise. It is only by working together that we can achieve solutions to the challenges that confront us.

Unfortunately, this week House Republicans continued the same partisan politics from the 112th Congress. By passing a bill that once again offered only a temporary solution instead of providing long-term certainty and stability to our country's economy and businesses, Republicans chose political gimmicks over economic solutions. We should have passed a long-term debt ceiling increase, which would provide certainty as we work together to achieve a balanced agreement to reduce our deficits and put our country back on a fiscally sustainable path. Democrats are prepared to move forward and work toward more responsible solutions to our upcoming fiscal challenges.
