Boehner Column: 2013 Will Be Focused on Cutting Spending and Tackling Our Debt

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) released the following column discussing Washington's out of control spending that has led to a $16 trillion national debt that threatens our country's future:
"The federal government has a spending problem, and that spending problem has led to a $16 trillion national debt that threatens our country's future.

"The day after the 2012 election, I began the discussion about taking responsible and meaningful steps to begin to solve our debt problem. I want to continue that discussion with you today.

"Our government has built up too much debt. Our economy is not producing enough jobs. These are not separate problems. At $16 trillion and rising, our national debt is draining free enterprise and weakening the ship of state.

"The gravity of the situation is compounded by the fact that we have a president who just doesn't seem willing to challenge his own party to begin taking the steps necessary to fix the problem. When I and other Republicans proposed that the two parties work together to enact serious spending cuts to begin addressing the debt, President Obama told me: 'We don't have a spending problem.'

"He's simply wrong. We do have a spending problem in Washington, and it is the driving force behind our debt crisis.

"As Investor's Business Daily recently pointed out, "[I]n its final report [Obama's debt commission] made clear that spending is the driving force behind the nation's debt crisis. Here's what the report said: "Even after the economy recovers, federal spending is projected to increase faster than revenues, so the government will have to continue borrowing money to spend.'

"Without meaningful reform of entitlements, real spending controls, and a fairer, cleaner tax code, our debt will continue to grow, and our economy will continue to stumble.

"Republicans stand for a stronger, more prosperous America, rich in opportunity and free of the debt that threatens our children's future. We know it is wrong to pass on this debt to our kids and grand kids. So now we have to be willing -- truly willing -- to make this right.

"As I said in my opening remarks of the 113th Congress, we, as your representatives, are sent to Washington not to be something, but to do something -- to do the right thing. It's a big job, and it comes with big challenges.

"In November 2012, the American people re-elected a Republican majority in the House, and we plan to use that majority in 2013 to hold the president accountable for the "balanced' governing approach he promised, meaning significant spending cuts and reforms to the entitlement programs that are driving our country deeper and deeper into debt.

"I have always said there is no substitute for the wisdom of the people. We work for you, and I invite you to get involved in the drive to stop out of control government spending and eliminate our debt.

"Please visit and send me your thoughts and suggestions about what you'd like to see done to address the spending problem in Washington.

"In order to secure for our children a future of freedom and opportunity, your leaders in Washington must take action now to tackle our debt crisis. Nothing is more important."
