Representative Steve Southerland, II issued the following statement in opposition to the fiscal cliff compromise:

"After prayerful consideration and hearing the concerns of hundreds of North and Northwest Floridians, I came to the conclusion that I simply could not support a fiscal cliff deal that takes a bad situation and makes it worse. I recognize the importance of continuing sorely needed tax relief. That's why I voted months ago to avert the fiscal cliff and extend all the tax relief measures for hardworking families. Unfortunately, President Obama and Senator Reid didn't share our sense of urgency, paving the way for a dead-of-night compromise that yields just $1 in spending cuts for every $41 in tax hikes. I'm afraid that a deal like that would abandon our children and grandchildren on a cliff that they may never be able to climb, and for that reason we must do better."
