Perlmutter Urges A Vote And Bipartisan Support For Gun Violence Prevention Measures

Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07), a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released the following statement concerning President Obama's proposals to reduce gun violence:

"Today, President Obama outlined a number of common sense proposals to keep our neighborhoods safe from gun violence. Executive action is a part of the process. But, there are efforts Congress must consider and act upon to ensure the health and safety of our communities and make gun violence less easy, less frequent and less deadly.

I know from listening to my constituents there are sensible solutions most Americans support like addressing mental health issues, enacting universal criminal background checks on any gun purchase, keeping military-style assault weapons off the streets and limiting high capacity assault magazines. These measure should be brought to a vote in Congress with bipartisan support now, and not let gun lobbyists blocks these solutions.

I respect and value the Second Amendment and value the liberty and rights of hunters, sportsmen, and personal defense gun owners, and they have nothing to fear in these ideas. We cannot wait another day, week or month. The time for action is now to make gun violence less easy, less frequent, less deadly and keep our kids and communities safe."
