Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA), Ranking of Member of the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights issued the following statement today in reaction to Congolese rebels declaring a unilateral ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo:
"I'm cautiously optimistic after hearing of a ceasefire in the DRC but as is often the case with these situations we must wait to see if the peace will hold. A long term solution is needed where we see an end to the recruitment of child soldiers, those who have committed human rights abuses brought to justice and a cessation of activities that do not respect the territorial integrity of the DRC. Only then will we see a lasting peace."
