Today Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA), member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and co-founder of the bi-partisan Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth released the following statement on Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to sign legislation banning Americans from adopting Russian children.
"I want to add my voice to the growing list of Americans and Russians who are calling on President Putin to refrain from taking actions that victimize children just to make a political point. If President Putin disagrees with U.S. actions against Russian officials deemed to be human rights violators -- a more constructive course would be to come to the table and air out those specific disagreements while leaving innocent children out of it. Our focus here must be on protecting children and doing what's in their best interest. Denying children the opportunity to grow up in a loving home, with parents to care for them is not the right action to take and I urge President Putin to reconsider his position."
