Rep. Waxman Statement on Toxic Coal Ash Disposal Report

Statement

Date: Dec. 21, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman issued the following statement about a new report on toxic coal ash disposal from the Environmental Integrity Project:

"Before any member of Congress votes to block federal action on coal ash disposal, they should be required to read the new information released by the Environmental Integrity Project. According to industry's own data between 2009 and 2011, energy companies dumped more than a billion pounds of arsenic and other toxic metals in ash ponds and landfills. We must ensure that public health and the environment are protected from this toxic waste."

Many coal ash dumps are known to leak into local groundwater and some are considered to be "high hazard," based on the potential for catastrophe should a dam fail.
