Senator Jay Rockefeller today issued the following statement on President Obama nominating Senator John Kerry (D-MA) as U.S. Secretary of State.

"Senator Kerry is an exceptional choice for Secretary of State. His experience in foreign affairs is exhaustive and his leadership has been well proven through many years of service to his country.

"Throughout his life, Senator Kerry has shown himself to be whip smart, thoughtful, and determined. He brings a tremendous breadth and depth of understanding of the world and our crucial role in it.

"As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Kerry also offers well-established personal and professional credibility across the American and international political spectrums, with an ability to work across the aisle to get things done for the good of the country. And as a veteran, he personally understands the sacrifices of the civilian and military men and women who work so tirelessly for all of us around the globe.

"Time and time again, Senator Kerry has shown the American people and the rest of the world that he is a strong voice and strategic leader for our country.

"I join our nation in extending my sincere thanks to Secretary Hillary Clinton for her four years of leadership as an outstanding and highly effective Secretary of State, and I hope the Senate will act quickly to approve Senator Kerry as a worthy successor."
