Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett today announced that the state would not establish a state-based health insurance exchange. Congressman Joe Pitts (PA-16), Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, applauded the move to avoid entangling the state as many of the regulations governing exchanges remain unwritten.

Congressman Pitts' statement follows:

"I applaud Governor Corbett's decision to not create a state-based health insurance exchange at this time. Since the time of the law's passage nearly three years ago, states have waited for clear answers about how to implement exchanges. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has repeatedly ignored requests from governors, insurance commissioners, and state officials in both parties. Numerous letters and phone calls have gone unanswered.

"At this time, there is a great deal of uncertainty about the true costs of setting up and running an exchange. As the Governor said, he cannot put Pennsylvanians on the hook for an unknown amount of money. Tomorrow, the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee will hear from state officials, including the Pennsylvania Secretary of the Department of Public Welfare, about how many unanswered questions they have just 13 months out from full implementation of the President's health law. Today, Governor Corbett made the responsible decision to leave the maintenance of this federal law in the hands of the federal government."
