Levin Statement on Court Ruling Protecting Consumers from Commodity Speculators

Location: Washington, DC

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., said the following today:

"The court decision upholding a regulation to require mutual funds speculating in commodities to register with the CFTC is a victory for consumers. The court appropriately shot down the effort of mutual funds to use offshore corporations to avoid consumer protections that apply to all other commodity brokers. The court, by accepting the agency's analysis of both the costs of the regulation and the benefits of safer and more transparent markets, made a real contribution to the jurisprudence on cost-benefit analysis."
