Rangel: Republicans Just Don't Get It

Statement

Congressman Charles B. Rangel released the following statement today after the House Republican leadership released its proposal in the ongoing negotiations to avert the fiscal cliff:

"Republicans just don't get it. Americans have spoken loud and clear on Election Day: They want us to support President Barack Obama's balanced approach to reducing the deficit without hurting American families.

Yet, in their proposal Republicans insist on putting millionaires and billionaires before the middle class, seniors, and our nation's future. The Republican plan simply fails the balance test. It aims to cutting $900 billion in spending by increasing the eligibility age for Medicare and lowering the cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) for Social Security benefits.

Majority of Americans want the government to leave Medicare and Social Security alone. Instead of playing political games, House Republicans should allow a vote on the Senate-passed middle income tax cuts. The President is ready to sign the bill. The American people need us to act immediately. There is no excuse to delay it. "
