Rep. Michaud Praises Inclusion of Trade Enforcement Provisions he Pushed

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Representative Mike Michaud (D-ME), Chairman of the House Trade Working Group, voted to pass H.R. 6156, a bill that provides Russia and Moldova normal trade relations status and establishes new human rights-related sanctions on Russia. The bill also improves trade enforcement measures available to the United States that are similar to those contained in a bill that Michaud introduced and urged the Ways and Means Committee to consider in July. The bipartisan bill passed by a vote of 365-43.

"Having worked closely with the committee on this issue for months, I'm pleased to see the stricter trade enforcement measures I pushed for are included in this bill," said Michaud. "We saw what happened with China when we didn't have safeguards in place, and we can't afford to repeat past mistakes. If Russia skirts international trade rules, this bill will allow us to level the playing field for our businesses. This represents an unprecedented step toward improving trade enforcement and accountability."

During a colloquy on the House floor today with House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (MI-12), Michaud secured the Committee's commitment to work with him to ensure the Obama Administration lives up to the new enforcement standards and that Congress proactively works to ensure that American businesses see the benefits of this bill.
