Hirono: We Must Work Together to Stay on the Path to Full Recovery

Location: Honolulu, HI

Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (HI-02) released the following statement today on the U.S. Department of Labor's report that the nation's economy added more than 171,000 jobs in October and 84,000 more jobs in August and September than originally reported:

"There is no doubt that the road to recovery has been difficult for families across our country. I've spoken to many people in Hawaii who have fallen on hard times and have struggled to make ends meet. But no matter what we've faced, nothing can stop America's relentless drive for a better tomorrow.

"Today, we can see real signs of progress: Thirty-two straight months of private sector job growth created 5.4 million jobs. The lowest unemployment rate in Hawaii since December 2008. And the continued surge of Hawaii's visitor industry, with significant increases in arrivals and spending.

"But we should not and cannot get complacent. Congress can help ensure we build the foundation of a strong economy for generations to come. We must address our deficit with a balanced approach to our budget that isn't based on ideology. We can put teachers, construction workers, and first responders back to work by supporting President Obama's American Jobs Act. And we can create 6,000 jobs in Hawaii by passing my bipartisan VISIT USA Act, which would cut visa red tape and strengthen our visitor industry.

"These challenges are too serious to face alone, but I know we can work together to stay on the path to full recovery."
