Lautenberg, Menendez Announce $10 Million in Emergency Highway Funding for New Jersey

U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today applauded President Obama and the U.S. Department of Transportation for acting quickly to release $10 million in emergency highway funding to help get New Jersey's highways and roads back in working condition. The funding will be distributed to the New Jersey Department of Transportation to help restore traffic services, establish detours, and perform emergency roadway repairs on federal-aid roads and bridges that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. In a letter to President Obama sent earlier today, the Senators called for the speedy release of transportation aid to help get transportation in New Jersey up and running as quickly as possible.

"The President is acting quickly to get federal funds where they are needed most, and this transportation funding is a key step in restoring our roadways and bridges," said Senator Lautenberg, a member of the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee. "We will continue working to bring federal resources to New Jersey to get residents moving again and so that our state and local governments can rebuild without being overburdened by repair costs."

"It's absolutely critical for our highways to be fully functional so that our local and state responders as well as our commuters and businesses can hit the road as we try to recover," said Senator Menendez. "This emergency relief grant will go a long way in helping to clean up debris, establish detours and ultimately repair our roadways and restore traffic services so that people can try to get back to a more normal routine. I once again thank the Obama administration for its swift action to help New Jersey and will continue working with the Department of Transportation in the weeks ahead."
