Hoyer Meets with Defense Contractors from NAS Patuxent River

Press Release

Location: Lexington Park, MD

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) met with defense contractors from Patuxent River Naval Air Station at the invitation of the Navy Alliance, the Small Business Roundtable, and others. The group thanked Congressman Hoyer for continuing to work with them to resolve concerns about the implementation of a confluence of directives from the Office of Management and Budget and the Department of Defense. The group also discussed the impact of the looming fiscal cliff, and how Congressman Hoyer is working to replace the sequester with a comprehensive deficit reduction plan.

"Today, I met with local defense contractors to continue working together to resolve the implementation of new directives that could impact our defense community," stated Congressman Hoyer. "I'm pleased that we have worked together to resolve many of the concerns raised within our community, and I will continue to work with these leaders, as well as NAVAIR leadership, to protect local jobs."

"We also discussed the looming sequester, which could have a negative impact on our community and every community affected by defense spending if Congress fails to take action," continued Congressman Hoyer. "I'm committed to replacing the sequester, and will be urging both parties to enact a big, bold, balanced plan so that we can avoid these harmful cuts and provide certainty to local businesses."

Congressman Hoyer first met with the contractors in July to discuss policy directives that were being implemented by NAVAIR and their concerns that the directives would have an impact on jobs. He later facilitated a larger meeting of contractors and the NAVAIR Command leadership team to discuss an implementation plan, which led to a less restrictive interpretation of the directives. He will continue to work with the contractors and NAVAIR on implementation in the coming months, and remains focused on preventing the sequester from going into effect.
