On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Zambia as you celebrate your 48th anniversary of independence this October 24.

The partnership between our two nations is grounded in mutual respect and mutual responsibility, and enhances the security and prosperity of both our people.  The United States honors Zambia's proud tradition of unity and peace and your commitment to a democratic future that ensures respect for individual freedoms and responsible governance.  

As you celebrate this special day you can be confident that the United States stands with you as a partner and friend.  Congratulations and best wishes on a year of peace, prosperity, and opportunity.
