Hungry, homeless, and ill children do not learn well. Our kids deserve a safety net of social services that ensures that they come to school ready to learn. Adults who are out of work or worn down by chronic illness cannot purchase the goods and services that create the demand that leads businesses to hire more workers. Just as with education cuts, balancing our budget solely through measures that increase human misery and depress economic productivity seems to be a foolish long term strategy.
