Issue Position: Safety and Security for Our Families and Communities

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Law enforcement and first responders throughout the state has worked diligently to address the changing safety needs in each of our communities. Resources continue to limit their ability to stay ahead of some of these needs. Drastic population growth, along with increased highway traffic accidents and fatalities requires that we work with law enforcement and first responders to ensure we are doing all that we can to keep our families and communities safe. I support more flexibility in the funding provided to law enforcement and first responders so that they can adapt and address the needs in their respective communities.

Local elected leaders are best suited to address and fund priorities of their respective communities. The abolition of local property taxes would be detrimental to our public schools, park districts, city and county governments. I support the continued use of local property taxes as a funding mechanism for local government.
