Issue Position: Our Diversity Is Our Strength

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

My vision for Rhode Island is of a community that is committed to caring for each other and striving for the common good. Our diversity is one of our great strengths, and as your State Senator, my goal is to give all Rhode Islanders an opportunity to be heard at the State House. You can count on me to fight for civil rights, including the right to marry whomever you choose and the right to reproductive choice.

I believe that strong public schools are the cornerstone of our democracy. Because a quality education for every child is crucial to Rhode Island's future, I'll focus on improving the way we fund our public schools, and on changes - like greater access to technology - that will help all our students get the best education possible.

As someone who has always been passionate about supporting the most vulnerable Rhode Islanders, I'll work every day to ensure access to healthy foods, a safe home, and quality health and dental care, as well as for continued support of vital programs like RI Works and RiteCare.

I am committed to creating a climate of economic opportunity that is welcoming to employers, and a support system for small businesses that is available to anyone with a good idea and the willingness to work toward a dream. It's time to recognize Rhode Island's true economic potential and invest in companies that will create long-lasting jobs with good wages.

Rhode Island is filled with smart, innovative people and I believe in the value of bringing their voices and their ideas to the State House. During the past 10 years, I have been at the State House often, fighting for the well being of foster and adoptive children, and most recently seeking to improve the quality of life for working Rhode Islanders by advocating for paid family leave. I believe in the transformative power of accessible information, making smart and informed decisions, and working together to create a better Rhode Island for us all.
