Issue Position: Seniors and Veterans

Issue Position

Seniors
Seniors occupy an important segment of the population and economy. Massive state and federal debt issues will continue to squeeze out important funding for safety net programs. These are, for the most part, programs that seniors funded themselves through Medicare and Social Security taxes. This is not welfare.

Medicaid, on the other hand, is a program that is not funded adequately or monitored to make sure that only truly needy individuals are helped. Fraud and abuse in these programs siphon off many dollars that should be used for their designated purpose.

Part of my responsibility will be to see that these funds are utilized properly and effectively, as they relate to state run programs. Being a senior myself, I have a personal interest in making sure these programs are run the way they were intended.

Veterans

This group of citizens is as diverse as any in our society. There are young vets, just back from the wars, looking for jobs and educational opportunities. At the other end of the spectrum are vets, like myself, who are beyond normal job situations. As one of these vets, I am aware of both senior issues, as described above, and those of the younger vets, not on retirement programs, but who are struggling with health insurance and job issues. I am a dues paying member of the American Legion.

As a member of the Kentucky House of representatives, one of my obligations will be to see that these segments of our society are treated in an equitable manner
