I believe one of the most important civic changes in recent history is progress on the path to full rights and validation for everyone, regardless of gender and sexual orientation. But we're still not where we should be. Awareness programs, confidential reporting of bullying, no-bullying zones and other initiatives can have a real impact, both inside schools and on community attitudes. Sadly, a Kentucky House committee in the recent General Assembly session rejected an anti-bullying bill that would have forced public schools to fully address bullying. In addition to establishing legal protections, House Bill 336 would have mandated training for teachers and administrators to help identify and stop bullying. It would have promoted programs to help school-age children learn to co-exist with those who may be different from themselves.
