Congressman Barrow Statement on Cantor Visit

Press Release

Location: Unknown

U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) released the following statement regarding the Majority Leader Eric Cantor's visit to Georgia to campaign for Lee Anderson.

Congressman Barrow said:

"It's too bad that Lee Anderson is campaigning with the one individual most responsible for preventing Congress from passing a farm bill. There is enough bipartisan support for the House to pass the bill, but it has never been allowed to come to the floor for a vote. Agriculture is critical to Georgia, and Congress' refusal to even consider a farm bill jeopardizes the future of our family farms. We don't know where Lee stands on a number of issues besides turning Medicare over to the private insurance industry, because he refuses to come out in the open and discuss them in a debate. But now we know that he's willing to put his political career ahead of the single most important issue in the State of Georgia. That's sad, even for a politician like Lee Anderson."

Congressman Barrow joined his Republican and Democratic colleagues from the House and Senate in calling on Congress to pass a farm bill.

In an Effingham Herald story published September 20, 2012, Lee Anderson is quoted as saying, "Agriculture is the state's No. 1 business." Nonetheless, Mr. Anderson campaigns with the one person responsible for preventing the much-needed farm bill from coming up for a vote.

Recently, reports have surfaced that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor refused to bring the long-awaited farm bill to the floor, despite bipartisan support. Republican and Democratic House members have discovered that the bill had enough votes to move forward in the House, according to a recent story by The Hill newspaper. The story can be found here.

In another blistering article, Republicans continued to blame the Majority Leader for failure to bring the farm bill to a vote.
