Gov. Gary Johnson Announces Support for Marriage Equality Law in Maryland

Libertarian presidential candidate and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson today announced his support for Question 6 on Maryland's November ballot, the Civil Marriage Protection Act.

Urging passage of the marriage equality law, Johnson said, "Marriage equality is, I believe, a constitutionally guaranteed right, and I am confident that laws outlawing gay marriage will ultimately be stricken down by the Supreme Court, just as laws banning interracial marriage were stricken decades ago.

"On November 6, Maryland voters will have a great opportunity to place a key state firmly on the side of equality, nondiscrimination, and the freedom of individuals to make their own decisions about who they choose to marry. I urge the good folks of Maryland to seize that opportunity and approve the Civil Marriage Protection Act.

"While government should not be in the business of discriminating or choosing who can marry, we must also respect the religious freedoms of those faiths that do not recognize gay marriage. In crafting the law that will be on the Maryland ballot, the legislature went to great lengths to balance marriage equality and religious freedoms, and I commend them."

Gov. Johnson announced his endorsement of Question 6 Thursday during a visit to Washington, D.C.
