Yesterday, The Concord Coalition honored me with the 2012 Paul E. Tsongas Economic Patriot Award. This award has been given annually since 1994 to honor "outstanding individuals who have demonstrated leadership in and commitment to fiscal responsibility in a bipartisan manner.'
The Concord Coalition is a nationwide, non-partisan, grassroots organization advocating generationally responsible fiscal policy. The Concord Coalition is dedicated to educating the public about the causes and consequences of federal budget deficits, the long-term challenges facing America's unsustainable entitlement programs, and how to build a sound economy for future generations.
The fiscal policies that expire at the end of the year known as the 'fiscal cliff', presents a rare opportunity to set aside politics and find common ground. As the second highest-ranking Democrat on the Budget Committee, I have consistently worked toward the goal of reducing our nation's deficit in a balanced and fiscally responsible manner.
I believe we have a duty to reduce our nation's deficit and ensure that we can compete in a 21st century global economy. This is why earlier this year, I was one of only 38 Members of Congress to vote for the only bipartisan budget offered by Reps. Cooper and LaTourette. That plan would have cut the deficit by $4 trillion over the next 10 years with a balanced approach--two-thirds of the deficit savings from spending cuts and one-third from tax reform.
As always, it is an honor to represent you in Congress.
