Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), author of the Smarter Approach to Nuclear Expenditures (SANE) Act, released the following statement today in reaction to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's address on foreign policy and national security. The SANE Act would cut $100 billion over ten years from America's bloated nuclear weapons budget.
"Instead of cutting funding for defense, Mitt Romney wants to cut programs for the defenseless. Mitt Romney joins Republicans who would rather flip flop on their support for last year's debt deal and bestow billions more to the Pentagon to pay for nuclear weapons that we do not need and cannot afford all while supporting cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and student loans. We should cutting Minutemen missiles instead of Medicaid, gravity bombs instead of Grandma's prescriptions. It is time to stop wasting billions on outdated Cold War weapons and invest in our true long-term economic and security needs."
