Jobs Update

Statement

September's jobs numbers are encouraging, but far too many folks are still out of work. The manufacturing industry lost 16,000 jobs in September, adding to the 15,000 that manufacturing lost in August. It's important that we focus on creating well-paying jobs here at home. To continue adding new jobs and increase labor participation, we need to create tax certainty for small businesses, remove unnecessary regulations, and let the world know America is open for business.

We shouldn't be satisfied until every American who wants work has the opportunity to do so. I've been pro-growth since my first day in Congress, and I'm grateful to have been recognized by the National Association of Manufacturers for my pro-manufacturing voting record in Congress. The news that the Obama administration is purchasing Thomson Correctional Center from the state of Illinois is a welcome development for our region, particularly those who have been struggling to find good jobs. Congress must now work to appropriate funds for operation expenses and others, and I remain optimistic that Senator Dick Durbin -- in his role on the Senate Appropriations Committee -- will take the lead in that effort. The Senate needs to get on board and pass the more than 30 House-passed jobs bills. Together, we can recover.
