U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren today released the following statement on the 16th anniversary of the Defense of Marriage Act being signed into law. That bill established legalized discrimination against gay and lesbian couples:

"Today's anniversary reminds us that the fight for fairness and equality for all Americans is still ongoing. Our federal government should not be in the business of selecting which married couples it supports and which it treats with contempt. It is long past time that we end the two-tiered system created by the Defense of Marriage Act. Fairness and equality are foundational values in our country, and nowhere is that more important than in our families. I will be a leader in the fight for full equality for all Americans in the United States Senate."
