Tierney And Top Democrat On Budget Committee Discuss Impact of Ryan Budget on Middle Class Taxpayers

Earlier today on a conference call with reporters, Congressman John Tierney joined Congressman Chris Van Hollen (MD-8), the highest-ranking Democrat on the House Budget Committee, to discuss the devastating impact of the Ryan Budget, which Tierney's opponent Richard Tisei has said is "a good start," versus the proposed Democratic budget. Tierney and Van Hollen criticized the Ryan Budget for ending Medicare, protecting tax breaks for the wealthy while raising taxes on the middle class, and rewarding companies that ship jobs overseas.

Congressman Van Hollen emphasized his support for Tierney and the need to reclaim a Democratic majority in Congress to stop the Tea Party Republican Plan. He highlighted Tierney's record of fighting for middle class families and said that Tierney is an important ally in passing a pro-jobs budget that will help grow our economy from the middle class out. Van Hollen warned that sending more Republicans like Richard Tisei to Congress will enable them to pass their radical agenda.

"Voters have a clear choice in this election," said Congressman Chris Van Hollen. "We can turn back the clock with a GOP agenda that crashed the economy, or we can move forward together. It has been great working with Congressman Tierney on a budget that will protect seniors, create jobs, and get our fiscal house in order."

Van Hollen added, "Richard Tisei will be another vote for the Republican plan to end the Medicare guarantee and undo health care reform. John Tierney has always been a tireless advocate for the middle class families in his District, and I hope that we can continue our work together in the next Congress."

Tierney criticized his Republican opponent, Richard Tisei, for supporting the Ryan Budget and marching in lock step with the Tea Party agenda.

"Seniors deserve a secure retirement and that's why I will continue to fight against Republican efforts to privatize Medicare and Social Security," said Congressman John Tierney. "We need a federal budget that puts the middle class first and protects our seniors. I look forward to continuing to work with Chris Van Hollen to pass a responsible budget that will put us on the path to a stronger middle class."

Tierney and Van Hollen criticized the Republican plan, supported by Tisei, because it will extend tax cuts for the wealthy while raising taxes on the middle class. In last week's debate Tisei spoke in favor of the GOP strategy to hold middle class tax cuts hostage and protect special tax giveaways for the ultra wealthy. Tierney favors keeping the current tax rate in place for middle-class families and ending the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
