Helping Veterans

Statement

Date: Sept. 14, 2012
Issues: Veterans

This week the House passed a comprehensive veterans bill that included the Safe Housing for Homeless Veterans Act, which I introduced. The bill requires any organization that seeks funding from the Veterans Affairs for services to homeless veterans to have documentation that their building meets or exceeds all local building codes.

This bill will ensure our homeless veterans have access to safe shelters. In defense of our country, these men and women were put in harm's way; they should not be in doubt about their own safety now that they are home again. As only one of two engineers in Congress, I was struck by how many shelters were not in compliance with safety codes. Once veterans enter into these programs it is important to provide a safe environment to house our nation's heroes so they can rehabilitate and become productive members of our society.
