U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield (KY-01) released the following statement today regarding the continued violence against Americans in the Middle East and Northern Africa:
"I strongly condemn the continued attacks on our Embassies across the Middle East and Northern Africa. Frankly, I am very concerned about what has happened and what seems to be a tepid response on the part of the President.
"Attacks on our Embassies, and the assassination of Ambassador Christopher Stevens is an attack on all Americans. Our Embassies abroad are sovereign U.S. territory and our Ambassadors in country are representing our government at the highest level. These attacks were a direct assault on the United States of America.
"While this was not an attack by the Governments of these countries, but groups of murderous thugs, the Governments of the countries where we are under attack must work to find those responsible, and bring them to justice. In the meantime, we must send powerful and effective messages to the governments of those foreign countries where this occurred, that this will not be tolerated and we expect full support as we ensure the safety and security of our citizens living and working in the region. Without this cooperation there will be a price for them to pay in terms of American support and financial assistance.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving this great nation, those injured and those in harm's way during these senseless attacks."
