Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement congratulating the brave and peaceful pro democracy activists who have ended their hunger strike in Cuba after the Castro regime released Jorge Vazquez Chaviano.

Said Ros-Lehtinen:

"I congratulate the peaceful democratic freedom fighters across Cuba who have won a moral victory against their hated oppressor, the Castro regime. Brave pro-democracy activists all across the island have engaged in hunger strikes for over a week to protest the daily wanton arrests and brutality of the Castro dictatorship.

While I am pleased at this recent development, I am also concerned that future hunger strikes can have the capacity to kill off the future leaders of a free Cuba. As I have said before and will reiterate again, the cause of a democratic Cuban nation cannot afford to lose leaders like Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello, Jorge Luis Garcia Perez "Antunez' and so many others."
